Skopje mayor: Mayors must carry out deratization after repeated rodent reports
Orce Gjorgjievski said he will remind mayors at a ZELS meeting after citizens reported rodents across Skopje; Centar Municipality announced deratization.
Skopje Mayor Orce Gjorgjievski told reporters before the start of a ZELS meeting that it is the responsibility of municipal mayors to organise deratization after a wave of citizen reports about rodents across the city.
Local government must act, mayor says
Gjorgjievski said he will raise the issue again at the gathering of the Association of Units of Local Self-Government (ZELS), although he has already notified colleagues by letter from his office and via the Center for Public Health.
Residents from several Skopje municipalities — and most frequently from Centar Municipality — have reported seeing live or dead mice and rats almost every day in recent weeks, prompting public concern and calls for urgent pest control.
Centar Municipality has announced it will carry out deratization. Residents in parts of the city have described what they are seeing as "Huge rats the size of cats."
Gjorgjievski stressed that municipalities bear the operational duty to organise rodent control, and said he expects mayors to implement measures quickly once reminded at the ZELS meeting and after coordinating with public health authorities.
