North Macedonia requires winter equipment from November 15
From November 15 to March 15 drivers must meet tyre and equipment rules — winter tyres, tread depths and chains are specified.

Drivers in North Macedonia have until November 15, 2026 to prepare their vehicles for the winter season: from November 15 to March 15 winter equipment is mandatory and failure to comply may lead to penalties.
Tyres and chains: what the rule requires
For passenger cars with a maximum permitted mass up to 3,500 kilograms there are two legal options. The first option is winter tyres on all four wheels with a minimum tread depth of 4 mm. The second option allows summer tyres on all four wheels, also with at least 4 mm tread depth, provided the vehicle carries snow chains for the driven wheels or another suitable traction aid.
Four-wheel drive vehicles face stricter conditions: winter tyres on all four wheels must have at least 6 mm tread depth. Alternatively, summer tyres with a minimum 4 mm tread depth are permitted only if snow chains are kept in the vehicle.
Although the rules permit summer tyres with chains as an alternative, that does not make them the safest choice in all winter conditions: summer tyres lose grip on cold and wet surfaces, while winter tyres are made from compounds designed for low temperatures. Drivers should check tyre sidewall markings — M+S indicates mud and snow suitability and the mountain-three-peaks-with-snowflake symbol (3PMSF) shows compliance with defined winter performance criteria.
Winter readiness extends beyond tyres. Before the season starts drivers are advised to check battery condition, antifreeze, lights, windscreen wipers and the heating system. It is also useful to carry a warm blanket, gloves, a small shovel, a mobile phone charger and a basic first aid kit, especially for long journeys or mountain roads. Finally, proper equipment must be combined with cautious driving: adapt speed to road conditions, keep greater following distances and avoid sudden braking and sharp maneuvers.
