Official: Jannik Sinner will not play the US Open
The Italian withdrew after testing his recovery on court in Monte Carlo; he is the 2025 US Open champion and currently ATP No. 1.

Jannik Sinner has confirmed he will miss the 2026 US Open, announcing on social media that persistent problems with his right knee mean he needs more time to recover.
World No. 1 withdraws after testing his knee on court in Monte Carlo
“Although I worked hard with my team and medical staff, we had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to play at the US Open this year. In the last few days we returned to the court in Monte Carlo and realized that I still need more time to recover from the right knee injury. Of course, I am very sad and disappointed, because New York has a special place in my heart. I was really looking forward to returning and playing in that electrifying atmosphere in front of a great crowd,” he wrote.
Sinner’s final competitive match came in London, where he defeated Alexander Zverev 3:1 to win Wimbledon. The Italian’s withdrawal represents a significant absence for the fourth Grand Slam of the season.
Organisers will feel the impact: Sinner was the reigning US Open champion, having won the tournament in 2025, and he currently sits atop the ATP rankings. One consolation for the tournament is that Carlos Alcaraz confirmed his participation a day earlier.
The 2026 US Open will now proceed without one of its headline names as Sinner and his team prioritise a full recovery over a hurried return to competition. The player expressed disappointment but stressed the need for patience in rehabilitating his right knee before resuming the season.
