Ohrid to open new nursing home in Daljan by end of 2026, pensioners fear they cannot afford it

A new nursing home in the Daljan neighbourhood on the shore of Lake Ohrid is set to open by the end of 2026, municipal officials say, ending more than a decade of waiting for the facility.

The building has already been completed, but officials expect to know within a month or two when it will begin receiving residents. The municipality says investors are examining several options for how the facility will operate and what services it will offer.

Extra health services possible, municipality wants quick opening

Besides residential care for older people, the complex can accommodate additional health services, including hospital capacities, under the current urban plan. The mayor of Ohrid, Kiril Pecakov, said investors are looking at different variants and the city wants the facility brought into use as soon as possible.

"The building is nearly finished. In addition to the residential capacity, meaning care for the elderly, there is also the possibility of a hospital within the building, based on the urban plan, up to 30 percent in compatible uses. Investors are considering various options in which we as a city have an interest to be involved, so that all of this is put into operation sooner. In the next month or two there should be a resolution and we will get a predictable date for the start of work," Pecakov said.

Local pensioners, however, have voiced concerns that, given low pension levels, they will not be able to afford accommodation in the new home. Municipal officials say they are aware of the worries and that how the service will be priced is one of the details still under consideration.
