The mayor of Tetovo, Bilal Kasami, together with the Austrian ambassador to North Macedonia, Martin Pamer, inspected damaged winter hiking markers on the trail between Popova Shapka and Titov Vrv on the Sharr Mountain.

The inspection followed a recent act of vandalism in which more than 45 marker posts were destroyed. The posts had been installed by more than 25 volunteers with support from the Austrian embassy.

Material damage from the incident is estimated at around €8,000, and officials warned that the removal of markers has put the safety of hikers in the area at risk during winter conditions.

Municipal response and planned repairs

The Municipality of Tetovo said it will repair the damaged waymarking on the Popova Shapka–Titov Vrv route and restore the trail markers to reduce hazards for visitors.

Less than two weeks after the vandalism, a tourist from Bulgaria became lost while hiking in the section where the posts had been removed — an episode local authorities cited as evidence of the increased danger for people on the mountain.

The visit by Kasami and Pamer highlighted the international support behind the original volunteer effort and the local authorities’ commitment to reinstate the winter signage.
