Suspect in Montenegro triple murder kills himself during arrest in Herceg Novi
Police located 30-year-old Russian Mikhail Shabunin in forest above Topla; he reportedly fired at officers before shooting himself.
A man wanted in connection with a triple killing in Danilovgrad died after a clash with police during an operation in Herceg Novi, Montenegrin authorities said. The 30‑year‑old Russian national Mikhail Shabunin was located overnight in woodland above the Topla neighbourhood and, according to officials, fired at officers before turning the weapon on himself.
Police said Shabunin was found by units including the Special Police Unit, a separate specialized unit, the Regional Security Center "South" and other tactical teams. He was located at 3:35 a.m., and shot at officers as they moved to surround him, then committed suicide with a firearm.
Officials: crisis in Herceg Novi over
Director of the Police Administration Lazar Šćepanović described the scene to local media, saying: "They located a threat in the forest above the Topla neighbourhood – a triple killer, who opened fire at the moment of arrest, and then shot himself in the head."
Interior Minister Danilo Šaranović posted on Facebook that the crisis in Herceg Novi had ended. He wrote: "The members of the Police Administration located and isolated the active threat, triple killer Mikhail Nikolaevich Shabunin, who, after being encircled by police, opened fire on police and committed suicide."
Police confirmed the suspect is believed to have carried out the murders yesterday at about 16:45 at the Česka zbrojevka shooting range near Danilovgrad. The victims were identified as Petar Globarević (24) from Podgorica, Momir Radonjić (67) from Danilovgrad and Nemanja Kapor (20) from Podgorica, all employed at the range.
Investigators say Shabunin stole one of the victims' cars after the killings and drove to the Rogami neighbourhood of Podgorica, from where he continued his flight by taxi to Herceg Novi. Police thanked the units involved for the operation and expressed their deepest condolences to the victims' families. They said investigators will continue working with the Higher State Prosecutor's Office in Podgorica to determine the full circumstances, including motive.
