Eight injured in maritime drone attack on Sochi
Regional Krasnodar authorities said eight people were wounded and beach infrastructure was partially damaged after a maritime drone strike in Sochi.
Eight people were wounded last night in Sochi after an attack using maritime drones, regional authorities in Krasnodar said on the messaging app Telegram.
The statement said beach infrastructure in the resort suffered partial damage. Video footage circulating on social networks shows an explosion on the seafront promenade, sounds of gunfire and people screaming; several international news agencies later verified the footage as authentic.
Rare sea-drone strike amid regular aerial attacks
The incident comes amid a pattern of near-daily Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory using aerial drones, including strikes deep inside Russia aimed at energy, export and logistics targets. Attacks carried out with maritime unmanned vessels are less frequent, security analysts say.
Sochi, a well-known Black Sea resort that hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics, is also home to an official residence of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Olympics took place shortly before Russia annexed the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine, which is likewise located on the Black Sea.
Authorities in Krasnodar did not immediately give further operational details or name who was responsible for the maritime drone attack.
