Greek Basketball Federation president Vangelos Liolios steps aside
Liolios withdrew from all basketball activities on 25 October 2026 while he faces a criminal investigation that included arrests and large cash seizures.

Vangelos Liolios, president of the Basketball Federation of Greece, has stepped away from all basketball-related duties while a criminal case alleging involvement in illegal activity and match‑fixing proceeds. The move was announced on 25 October 2026 as Liolios awaits the outcome of the judicial process.
Arrest, searches and evidence seized
Liolios informed the investigating judge of his decision to withdraw, saying he took the step so that basketball in Greece can continue “without the heavy burden” of the pending case. He was taken into custody after a period on the run and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Authorities arrested a total of six people in the probe, including five referees and federation officials in addition to Liolios. Among those detained was Vasiliki Tsaroucha, a referee who has officiated at EuroLeague level.
During searches connected to the investigation police seized €931,463 in cash as well as 14 mobile phones, six laptops, 22 USB memory sticks, team jerseys, sports souvenirs and other material that investigators say could be relevant to the case.
Liolios and his legal team deny any involvement in illegal conduct; his defence maintains there is no evidence linking him to match‑fixing. Prosecutors say the inquiry covers suspected attempts to influence game results across different levels of Greek basketball.
The federation’s leadership will remain in limbo while the judicial process continues and the criminal investigation advances, with officials saying they will cooperate with investigators as the case develops.
