Waste and microplastics pollute the Vardar, observed near Sirichino and Gostivar

This week huge quantities of waste again floated along the Vardar River, as happened several times this year and last; the latest occurrences were observed near Sirichino in the Tetovo area. This morning, as in April this year, the Vardar flowed through Gostivar for hours with an unrecognizable white color and opacity of the water.

“The river does not need human waste, it must preserve its natural course. Any action that is contrary to natural processes will negatively affect the entire population in the future,” warns retired specialist in environmental health, Dr. Ratko Davidovski.

“For example, plastic thrown into the river begins to break down, and micro particles through the water, food and fish reach people.”

The text states that “The flow of the Vardar river underground is twice as wide as on the surface which is Microplastic enters the groundwater, and through the groundwater wells can be contaminated, along the course of the Vardar river and all groundwater.”

Pollution of the Vardar and of any other river is not only an environmental but also a public health problem, the source writes, and there are documented studies showing that polluted rivers influence people to become ill.

As one of the latest studies it is stated: “One of the latest studies showed that of 10 cases of prostate cancer, in 9 were found — that is 90 percent microplastic; however every tissue is affected, starting from the skin. Skin irritation.”

The doctor reminds that human improper damage to river waters also poses a danger to flora and fauna. The incidents this week repeat similar incidents recorded earlier this year and last year.
