Albania writes off €410 million in overdue debts for over 204,000 taxpayers
The automatic scheme covers 204,413 taxpayers so far and will run until 31 December 2026, while the opposition claims political motives ahead of May local elections.

Albanian authorities have written off a total of €410 million in overdue debts for more than 204,000 taxpayers up to 31 July this year, the tax administration announced. The measure is being applied automatically for qualifying debtors under the provisions of the law governing write-offs and extinguishment of tax liabilities to central and local tax authorities and duties owed to customs.
“By the end of July, 204,413 taxpayers were included in this process, while the tax administration continues procedures for all users who meet the criteria set by the law,” the state news agency ATA said.
The General Directorate for Taxes reminded taxpayers that the debt-writeoff procedure will continue until 31 December 2026, the deadline set in current legislation. Officials say the measures aim to reduce the burden of outstanding liabilities on users and to clear backlog within the framework established by law.
According to the tax authority, the automatic continuation means eligible taxpayers do not have to submit individual requests to benefit from the scheme; their cases are assessed against the statutory criteria and processed accordingly.
The opposition, however, accused the ruling Socialists of timing the write-offs to gain political advantage ahead of local elections scheduled for May next year.
Tax officials say work will proceed for all users who meet the legal conditions, while political disagreement over the timing of the measure is likely to continue as the vote approaches.
