Catania airport reopens after warning level for Mount Etna was lowered

The operator of Catania Airport in Sicily announced that it will resume flight operations after the alert level for nearby Mount Etna was lowered. Passengers were urged to check the status of their flights with airlines before travelling to the airport.
It remains unclear how quickly the airport will scale up activity and what the volume of flights will be during the initial phase of reopening.
Limited sectors reopened
The operator said it reopened two airport sectors, but the airport's website continued to list numerous flights as cancelled or diverted — including services scheduled after 14:00, when reopening was planned.
Authorities and the operator gave no firm timetable for returning to full operations, saying they will monitor volcanic activity and adjust schedules as conditions evolve.
Travelers were advised to remain flexible, check directly with their airline for the latest updates and to follow official airport communications for further changes.
