Panama hit by magnitude 7.6 earthquake, tsunami threat issued

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 struck off Panama's southern coast, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The quake was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometers and was felt in Panama City as well as in San José, the capital of Costa Rica.

Tsunami threat issued for Pacific coasts

Authorities issued a tsunami threat for parts of the Pacific coast of Central and South America following the quake. Officials warned residents of low-lying coastal areas to be alert for possible tsunami waves and to follow instructions from local emergency services.

Seismic readings indicate the shallow depth of 10 kilometers may increase the likelihood of significant surface shaking along coastal communities. Emergency teams in Panama were reported mobilizing to assess damage and check vulnerable zones.

Reports from eyewitnesses said the tremor was strongly felt in Panama City and in San José, where residents described buildings swaying. At the time of writing, no comprehensive casualty or damage assessment had been published.

Seismologists continue to monitor aftershocks and sea-level sensors along the Pacific to detect any tsunami activity. Coastal communities from Central into South America were urged to remain vigilant until warnings are lifted.
