Passenger allegedly smokes on Basel–Tuzla flight; aircraft diverted to Budapest
A plane en route from Basel to Tuzla was diverted to Budapest after a passenger allegedly smoked onboard and set off the alarm.
A flight from Basel to Tuzla was forced to divert to Budapest on Monday after a passenger reportedly lit a cigarette in the cabin, triggering a safety alarm, passengers told fellow travelers.
Crew landed the aircraft after alarm sounded over Zagreb
According to one passenger's account, the alarm went off while the plane was flying over Zagreb. The flight crew decided to put the aircraft down in Budapest so authorities could intervene.
When the plane touched down in Budapest, police officers boarded and removed the passenger believed to be connected with the incident. Security checks were carried out on board before the journey resumed.
Once officials confirmed there was no further danger, the aircraft continued on to Tuzla. The flight had been scheduled to arrive at 19:20 but instead landed at the Tuzla airport at about 22:05 — nearly three hours late.
The delay also affected the same plane's next rotation, the service from Tuzla to Cologne.
Smoking on aircraft is prohibited by rules and can lead to a monetary fine or, in more serious cases, criminal charges. There is so far no official information about any penalty the passenger may face.
