Pedro Rodríguez announces retirement at 39

Pedro Rodríguez announced on social media that he is ending his professional playing career at the age of 39, after his contract with Lazio expired on June 30. The veteran forward said he felt it was the right moment to move on and open a new chapter in his life.

Career in trophies and clubs

Pedro finishes a decorated career with 25 trophies, including the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Championship in 2012 with Spain. At Barcelona he won three UEFA Champions League titles and five Spanish league championships, among other honours. He later won the Premier League with Chelsea and went on to have spells with Roma and Lazio.

Internationally, Pedro recorded 65 appearances for Spain and scored 17 goals. His retirement brings to a close a career that spanned top leagues in Spain, England and Italy.

Reflecting on his decision, Pedro wrote: "I feel that the right moment has come to take a step forward and to begin a new chapter in life. I leave proud that I fulfilled my dream. Football has made me very happy."

The announcement follows the formal end of his Lazio contract on June 30 and closes one of the most trophy-filled careers of his generation.
