Baker Radivoje Gajičić (73) found dead in the building's attic

In the Belgrade neighborhood of Karaburma the lifeless body of the well-known local baker Radivoje Gajičić (73) was found; he had lived in the building for years and among the neighbors was simply known as Raša. The scene was cordoned off while the police and the Institute of Forensic Medicine took over the investigation.

According to findings from the initial inspection, the body was found on a mattress in the building's attic — completely naked, with his hands tied behind his back with shoelaces. By order of the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade, the body was immediately sent to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for an autopsy and to determine the exact cause of death.

Different theories are being examined

Although the initial picture at the scene suggested violence, investigators so far have not reported visible signs of direct injury and the case has not been formally classified as a murder. One of the main theories being examined is that the 73-year-old baker felt unwell and died during sexual intercourse.

At the same time, the police are not ruling out the possibility of a robbery: according to police notes, the cash register in his bakery was found open. It is also being investigated that he recently sold an apartment for €180,000 and there is suspicion that a significant sum of money may have been kept in the apartment or in a safe. The police are collecting video surveillance footage around the premises to identify people who entered and left.

The neighbors describe the neighborhood as being in shock and say they do not know how to explain what exactly happened. "We all knew him and called him 'our Raša.' He was a wonderful man and beloved throughout the neighborhood. No one can understand exactly what happened and why it ended this way," the distraught neighbors say through tears. Final clarity will come after the autopsy results and additional analyses by the police.
