Little known to many outside China, Peng is the wife of Chinese president Xi Jinping and has become a visible instrument of Beijing's softer public face.
Within diplomatic circles she is often described as Xi's soft‑power asset — a figure who can present a gentler, more accessible image of China even as the two countries spar over trade and Taiwan.
Analyst: personal moments ease tensions
"She helps to put a more human face on what can otherwise be fairly stubborn diplomacy and generate moments of goodwill in U.S.-China relations," said Joe Mazur, a geopolitical analyst at the consultancy Trivium China based in Beijing.
At the same time, discussion of Peng's activities and fashion choices during the trip has been tightly limited on Chinese social media, underlining the controlled environment in which her public role is managed.
Her appearances in the United States highlight a deliberate use of personality and ceremony in diplomacy: small, carefully staged interactions that aim to soften broader political frictions without changing the underlying policy disputes.
