Peru: 11 citizens killed and 114 missing after joining Russia–Ukraine war

Peru's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that 11 Peruvian citizens have been killed and 114 are listed as missing after taking part in the war between Russia and Ukraine.

"According to official data, it has been determined that 459 Peruvian citizens participated in the war. Unfortunately, 11 of them lost their lives, 114 are recorded as missing, and three are held captive by the Ukrainian army," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru said.

Evacuations, consular cases and injured nationals

The ministry said 31 Peruvians were evacuated from Russia, and that two young Peruvian nationals who are in serious condition are being assisted by the consular section of the Peruvian Embassy in Russia for return to Peru. It also noted that two other citizens returned to the country at the end of July after consular procedures were completed.

Peruvian authorities warned citizens not to respond to false job offers related to the Russia–Ukraine conflict because of the risk of falling victim to human trafficking networks. The ministry reminded Peruvians that serving in the armed forces of a foreign state requires official authorization from the Government of Peru and urged people to report traffickers to the Public Prosecutor's Office and the National Police.

"Victims and their relatives may also contact the consulates of Peru in Moscow and Warsaw, which are responsible for consular matters related to the region of Ukraine," the ministry added. The Peruvian government has requested help from the International Committee of the Red Cross to locate missing nationals, while families of those who joined Russian forces have gathered outside the Russian embassy in Lima seeking information on injured relatives.
