Masud Pezeshkian: Talks with the US 'make no sense'

Iranian President Masud Pezeshkian told Armenia's foreign minister during a Tehran meeting that negotiating with the United States was pointless, repeating Tehran's frustration with Washington's behaviour.

"Negotiations make no sense with an enemy who daily terrorizes, imposes sanctions, exerts pressure and threatens," Pezeshkian said, addressing Ararat Mirzoyan in the Iranian capital.

The comment came as Tehran said that Washington has provided a response to Iran's so-called "seven-day plan" and that the reply is currently being reviewed internally by Iranian authorities. Iran added it remains prepared to pursue other options if diplomatic efforts to secure peace do not succeed.

Seven-day plan targets immediate de-escalation

Tehran's seven-day plan, presented to the UN General Assembly by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, demands the United States take a series of steps within seven days. Those measures include halting all military operations and hostilities — including in Lebanon — lifting a maritime blockade of Iranian ports, removing sanctions on Iranian oil exports and unfreezing billions of dollars of Iranian assets held in foreign banks.

Pezeshkian's remarks underline the widening gap between Tehran and Washington even as Iran offers a timetable for de-escalation. The president framed the US as an adversary whose actions, in his view, undercut the possibility of meaningful talks.

Armenian foreign minister Ararat Mirzoyan was in Tehran for talks that Iranian state media said covered bilateral issues as well as regional security concerns.
