Car drives into group near Cannes station after bar dispute — one dead, ten injured

A 26-year-old man deliberately drove his car into a group of people near the railway station in Cannes, France, killing one person and injuring ten others, authorities say.

According to initial reports, the incident followed a dispute in a bar in Cannes in which the suspect took part. After the argument he entered his vehicle and struck the group, then fled the scene by car before being arrested soon afterwards in the town of Uistrem, roughly 20 kilometres from Cannes.

Most victims are men; several critically injured

Medical authorities reported that ten people were taken to hospital: seven are in critical condition and three are in a stable but serious state. The injured were treated at the University Hospital in Cannes and other local medical facilities.

The deputy mayor of Cannes, Bruno Kutanses, said all the wounded were men; the youngest was 17 and the oldest around 40. The suspect, a 26-year-old born in Russia, has been placed in custody. Officials said he was not known to intelligence services and that police records showed only prior traffic offences.

Prosecutors have opened an investigation on suspicion of murder as authorities continue to question witnesses and examine events that led to the vehicle being driven into the group near the station.
