A 66-year-old woman from Rosoman has died after developing a severe form of West Nile fever that affected her central nervous system, hospital officials said. The patient’s condition was described as grave and she had multiple chronic underlying illnesses.

Health authorities report 11th fatality

The director of the Infectious Diseases Clinic in Skopje, Fadil Cana, told reporters the clinical course was very severe and ended in death. "Another patient with a severe form of West Nile fever is hospitalized at the Clinic; she has been in the intensive care unit for an extended period and is on mechanical ventilation. She has been at the Clinic for nearly a month," he said.

With this death the nationwide toll from West Nile fever has risen to 11.

Cana also noted a recent decline in new admissions: since 25 September there have been no further hospitalizations for West Nile fever, he said, while adding that clinicians continue to monitor the situation closely.

Health teams remain on alert locally and at medical centres as authorities continue to treat severe cases and advise preventive measures against mosquito bites.
