83-year-old with chronic conditions dies after West Nile virus infection

An 83-year-old patient with multiple chronic illnesses has died after being diagnosed with West Nile virus, the Clinic for Infectious Diseases confirmed.
The Clinic reported the presence of the virus in the deceased patient; health authorities are awaiting further information from the Ministry of Health, which is expected to provide updates today on the condition of other patients and any additional confirmed cases.
Current case numbers and risk groups
Health officials emphasize that older adults and people with chronic health conditions face a higher risk of developing severe disease from the virus and should take extra precautions.
Over the past 15 years, five fatal cases linked to West Nile virus have been recorded in North Macedonia. Recent reports also indicate seven new confirmed cases, of which three patients are in critical condition.
Authorities are expected to outline prevention measures and surveillance steps; in the meantime, clinicians urge the public—especially vulnerable groups—to seek care early if they develop symptoms consistent with West Nile virus infection.
