Nikola Stojanovski, first presiding elder of Macedonia’s multi‑party Assembly, dies at 103
Na 103 years, Stojanovski presided over the inaugural multi‑party Assembly session on 8 January 1991 and later handed the chair to Stojan Andov.
Doctor Nikola Stojanovski, who served as the oldest member presiding at the constituent session of North Macedonia’s first multi-party Assembly in 1991, has died in Skopje at the age of 103.
As the eldest deputy, Stojanovski led the inaugural sitting of the new Assembly on 8 January 1991 and subsequently ceded the chair to Stojan Andov.
Life and medical career
Stojanovski was born on 8 February 1932 in the village of Skachinci, near Veles. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade, in 1952 and six years later completed a specialization in pediatrics in Zagreb.
He spent his professional life in medicine, including a period serving as director of the hospital in Veles. For many years he also led the Union of Fighters of Macedonia.
Colleagues and local institutions noted his long public presence both in health care and in civic organizations. Details about funeral arrangements have not been released.
