Former Supreme Court Judge Mila Kambovska Dies at 79
Long-serving jurist and member of a court council that issued one of the first rulings on the right to a trial within a reasonable time has died.
Former Supreme Court judge Mila Kambovska died this weekend in Skopje. She was 79 years old.
Kambovska served for many years on the Supreme Court of the Republic of North Macedonia and was regarded as one of the court’s most experienced jurists. During her tenure she participated in panels that heard criminal cases and handled complex legal questions at the highest level of the judiciary.
Throughout her career she was a member of judicial councils that issued rulings shaping legal practice. Notably, she sat on the Supreme Court council that produced one of the first decisions addressing a violation of the right to a trial within a reasonable time, a legal standard introduced into Macedonian law following norms set by the European Court of Human Rights.
Legacy and role in legal development
Colleagues and legal scholars remember Kambovska for her steady presence on benches dealing with criminal matters and for contributions to procedural jurisprudence. Her work on early case law about trial length helped establish precedents that courts and practitioners reference today.
She was the wife of academic Vlado Kambovski, a longtime professor of criminal law, former Minister of Justice and former president of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts (MANU).
The funeral for Mila Kambovska was held on Monday.
