On 12 October 2026 construction began on the Bukojčani–Kičevo motorway, a new 11.5‑kilometre section that will form part of Corridor VIII and link the Kičevo–Ohrid and Tetovo–Gostivar–Bukojčani motorways.

Route, design and structures

The stretch will be 11.5 kilometres long and is planned with two traffic lanes plus one emergency lane in each direction. The design speed along the route is set between 110 and 130 kilometres per hour.

Engineers expect the alignment to include five bridges, one tunnel, two viaducts and two interchanges. The overall deadline for construction is four years.

Funding for the project combines a €119 million loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), a €20 million grant from the European Union and an additional €300,000 provided through the EU Fund for the Western Balkans.

Authorities say the new section will close a gap on Corridor VIII and improve connections between the western towns and the national motorway network, shortening travel times and increasing capacity for transit traffic.

Work on the Bukojčani–Kičevo section is expected to continue through the four‑year construction period, with benefits for regional mobility once the route is completed.
