A polar cold snap moved over New Zealand, producing snow at unusually low elevations and causing widespread disruption to road and ferry services.
Snow fell across parts of the South Island and was reported in the capital, Wellington — a phenomenon that meteorologists say is uncommon for this time of year. The plunge in temperatures was attributed to cold air arriving directly from Antarctica.
Transport and schools affected
Authorities closed several roads because of snowfall and icy surfaces, and they urged drivers to avoid unnecessary travel. Officials also warned about the formation of "black ice," which can create hazardous driving conditions in the coming days.
The storm led to the closure of a number of schools, particularly around the Dunedin area, and ferries operating between Wellington and Picton were cancelled or disrupted.
Emergency services and local councils advised residents to prepare for continued cold conditions and to check local updates before travelling, as crews worked to clear roads and restore normal services.
