Police carry out raids in Skopje probe into vehicle-registration fraud
Authorities executed searches in Skopje overnight in an investigation into alleged misuse of registration fees; initial estimated loss exceeds 13 million denars.
Police in Skopje carried out a series of searches late last night as part of an inquiry into alleged large-scale financial wrongdoing linked to vehicle registration fees, and there are reports that several people were detained.
The operation was conducted by units from the Department for Combating Organized and Serious Crime at the Public Security Bureau (PSB) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, authorities said, and officials indicated that additional details will be released during the day.
Allegations involve forged reports and diverted funds
Investigators are examining claims that money collected as fees for vehicle registration was concealed and redirected through falsified reports and payment slips. Unofficial information points to a scheme in which accounting documents were used to mask transfers of public funds.
Those under scrutiny reportedly include both natural persons and legal entities — several companies — and among the suspects are alleged employees of state institutions and enterprises. Unofficial sources further indicate that one of the persons connected to the case is employed by the Public Enterprise for State Roads (JPDP).
Police say the probe accelerated after one of the principal suspects allegedly attempted to leave the country, prompting investigators to move quickly to execute the searches. Initial estimates put the financial damage at over 13 million denars, roughly €212,000.
