Poland reinforces security on the Ukraine border after Russian drone attacks

Poland has announced stepped-up security along its border with Ukraine after two drone incidents over the weekend raised alarm among NATO allies. Polish Defence Minister Vladislav Koshnjak-Kamish said on X that the government has ordered reinforcements to the infrastructure used by the Border Guard following the attacks, one of which struck a train carrying a group of former Western officials.

"The last days show that Russia's actions endanger the security of all of Europe. In accordance with our government's decision, the infrastructure used by the Border Guard is being strengthened," Koshnjak-Kamish wrote on the X platform after the weekend attacks.

Military units and allied responses

According to the minister, "Soldiers from the 18th Engineering Regiment are already carrying out tasks which will strengthen checkpoints and infrastructure near the Polish–Ukrainian border." The steps aim to harden control points and other border facilities against further unmanned incursions.

The Russian Ministry of Defence confirmed two strikes near the Polish border on Tuesday and claimed the train that was hit was carrying military cargo. Polish authorities have highlighted concern because one of the struck trains transported former Western officials.

Separately, military officials in Lithuania reported for the first time that a drone was shot down in that country's airspace. Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto said an Italian NATO fighter jet shot down the drone and added that it "most likely came from Russia." NATO allies have been tightening surveillance and readiness in the region amid the incidents.

Poland's immediate measures centre on strengthening Border Guard infrastructure and deploying engineering units to reinforce checkpoints. Officials say further security adjustments will depend on ongoing assessments of threats along the eastern flank of NATO.
