Flooding in Madrigueras kills 102-year-old woman

On 3 October 2026, severe flooding in the municipality of Madrigueras in Spain’s Albacete province claimed the life of a 102-year-old woman.

The woman was inside her family home when water entered the building and she was unable to reach a safe place, regional authorities of Castile–La Mancha said.

According to initial measurements, more than 140 liters of rain per square meter fell in two hours.

Emergency response and alerts

The regional government immediately activated the first level of alert from its special flood protection plan. Emergency services, firefighters and rescue teams spent the night on the ground assisting residents and clearing debris.

Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez posted on the social network X, offering condolences to the family of the deceased and noting that the heavy rains have caused serious damage in several parts of the country.

Local authorities remain on alert as teams continue to assess damage and provide assistance to affected communities.
