Flooding in Tripoli leaves dead; government orders urgent interventions

Heavy rains have inundated Tripoli on October 14, 2026, causing widespread flooding in the Libyan capital and leaving people dead, officials reported. The Libyan government ordered public services to carry out urgent interventions as streets and buildings filled with water.

Infrastructure and health facilities affected

Authorities said several buildings in the city centre were flooded, including the corridors of the Central Hospital, where water reached patient and staff areas. Flooded electrical junctions were also reported, raising the risk of electrocution in affected neighbourhoods.

The Tripoli Directorate for Security declared the city ring road closed to traffic as rescue and clean-up efforts began. Emergency teams have been mobilised to help residents trapped by rising water and to clear blocked drains.

The Libyan National Meteorological Centre issued a forecast of heavy rain for northern parts of the country on Monday evening and warned residents living near dry riverbeds and in valley areas to take precautions and move to safer ground if necessary.

Officials recalled that Libya has suffered destructive floods in the past, noting similar severe events three years ago and nine years ago. Local authorities urged people to follow safety instructions as response operations continue.
