Former Iran goalkeeper detained in Urmia faces possible death penalty
Rashid Mazaheri has been accused of propaganda against the regime and endangering state security; his family says earlier charges are unfounded.
August 10, 2026. Former Iran national team goalkeeper Rashid Mazaheri is being held in detention in Urmia on charges that human rights advocates and his family say stem from his public criticism of the country's leadership.
Tehran authorities initially accused Mazaheri of attempting to cross the state border illegally and of paying a bribe. According to posts by activist Azar Jahangiri and statements by his wife Maryam Abdollahi, prosecutors later brought charges alleging propaganda against the regime and endangering state security.
Legal exposure and family claims
Under the Iranian Penal Code, the offences of propaganda against the regime and actions said to threaten state security carry the harshest penalties, including the possibility of the death penalty. Mazaheri's family maintains that the original accusations of attempted escape and bribery are unfounded and say he was denied access to independent legal counsel while in custody.
Mazaheri represented Iran at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia as a member of the national squad. His arrest has prompted calls from various human rights organisations for independent monitoring of the case and for respect of the detained athlete's procedural rights.
The situation has drawn attention beyond sport because it involves allegations related to political speech and criminal provisions that can carry capital punishment. Observers say any proceedings should be transparent and comply with international standards for fair trial and legal defence.
