Gary Glitter, 82, back in court charged over sexual abuse of eight-year-old
The 82-year-old ex-pop star appeared via video link and was remanded to custody until a hearing at the Old Bailey on 2 September.
Former pop star Gary Glitter, 82, has appeared again in court accused of sexually abusing a girl who was eight years old at the time, offences said to have occurred nearly half a century ago.
Glitter, whose legal name is Paul Gadd, faces one count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under 13 and three counts of indecent assault on a girl under 14. The alleged offences are said to have taken place between 1978 and 1981 at Glitter's then-home in London and concern a single victim.
The alleged victim was between eight and 11 years old at the time; her identity is not being published for legal reasons. Glitter appeared by video link from HMP Channings Wood in Devon at Westminster Magistrates' Court and told the court he was "extremely deaf", saying he relied on lip-reading and that a prison officer relayed information to him. During the 11-minute hearing Glitter did not enter a plea.
Remand and next hearing
Recorder Paul Goldspring ordered that Glitter remain in custody until his next appearance at the Central Criminal Court (Old Bailey) on 2 September. The Metropolitan Police said the matter was reported on 9 January last year and that Glitter was interviewed on 22 July 2025 as part of the investigation.
Former Greater Manchester detective and child sexual exploitation specialist Maggie Oliver said the alleged victim contacted police after seeking help from her charity. Prosecutors in London, represented by Bethan David, said last month they had "found there is sufficient evidence to proceed to trial and that it is in the public interest."
Glitter was sentenced in 2015 to 16 years' imprisonment for sexually abusing three schoolgirls between 1975 and 1980; that sentence is due to expire in 2031. He was automatically released from HMP The Verne in Dorset in February 2023 after serving half of that term and was placed on licence with an electronic tag, but was returned to custody a few weeks later after breaching the conditions of his release.
The offences for which he was convicted in 2015 emerged during Operation Yewtree, the Metropolitan Police inquiry launched after the Jimmy Savile scandal. Glitter was the first person arrested under that operation when he was taken from his London home in October 2012.
