Fire halts Bitola–Skopje train; all services on the route cancelled

A large wildfire between Prilep and Gostiražni forced the passenger train on the Bitola–Skopje line to stop safely in Gostiražni, AD Železnici Transport's director Dejan Košutić said on Facebook.

Services on the entire Skopje–Bitola route were cancelled for safety

Košutić wrote that the train was held while staff evaluated the situation and prepared the line for safe travel. "Thanks to the timely coordination of the Internal Control and the train crew of ŽRSM Transport, the train was safely held. After assessing the situation and ensuring conditions for safe travel, it will resume its journey to Skopje," he wrote.

For safety reasons, all other passenger services on the Skopje–Bitola–Skopje route were cancelled, the director added.

"The safety of passengers and railway staff is our absolute priority. ŽRSM Transport is monitoring the situation closely and will inform the public of any further changes," Košutić added, stressing that the company is following developments and will provide updates as conditions change.

The incident was reported on August 29, 2026; authorities and railway teams coordinated to secure the train and assess whether conditions along the section between Prilep and Gostiražni allow traffic to resume.
