Fire on vehicle ferry north of Mykonos — 29 evacuated
A vehicle ferry north of Mykonos caught fire this morning; responders evacuated 29 people and deployed tugs and fireboats to contain the blaze.
A fire broke out this morning on the deck of a vehicle-carrying ferry sailing north of the island of Mykonos in the Aegean Sea; 29 people were evacuated and there were no reported injuries.
The Hellenic Coast Guard said the vessel, flying the Greek flag, was carrying 66 freight vehicles and 29 private passenger cars when the blaze started.
Rescue and firefighting response
Five Coast Guard vessels, three fire-fighting boats, tugs and other craft were dispatched to the scene immediately after the fire began. Authorities said efforts focused on stabilizing the situation and protecting human life.
By the afternoon the situation aboard the ferry had improved: no flames were visible on deck and no black smoke was coming from the ship. A tug equipped to pump roughly 2,500 cubic metres of water per hour was brought alongside to spray the ferry’s hull and cool steel plates heated by the internal fire.
Officials also said a specialised salvage and repair team was expected to arrive. Coast Guard units worked to keep the ferry at a safe distance from the shore to prevent it from running aground.
