Problems for Zidane: Kylian Mbappé misses training ahead of Turkey game

France face uncertainty over the availability of captain Kylian Mbappé just days before their UEFA Nations League opener against Turkey. The forward missed the national team’s training session on Tuesday after developing flu-like symptoms, the second consecutive day he has stayed off the full pitch.

Mbappé had remained inside the team base during Monday’s session to recover, raising doubts about his fitness for Friday’s match in Istanbul on 25 September 2026. The absence comes as Zinedine Zidane prepares to make his competitive debut in charge of France.

Zidane's selection dilemma

Zidane, who took over the senior team after the World Cup in July, has already publicly insisted that Mbappé remains a key figure and the squad captain. Still, the coach now faces a headache: an enforced absence for his talisman would significantly alter France’s game plan.

Mbappé has produced an impressive start to the season for Real Madrid, starting seven times, scoring seven goals and supplying two assists. Losing that form for the national side would be a serious blow ahead of a group that includes Turkey, Belgium and Italy.

After the trip to Istanbul, France are scheduled to travel to Brussels for a Nations League fixture against Belgium on 28 September 2026. The coaching staff will monitor Mbappé’s condition closely over the next 48–72 hours before confirming the matchday squad.
