Firefighters recovered the body of an 83-year-old man from the Vardar river near the Gazi Baba neighbourhood of Skopje after he had been reported missing the day before.

"On 25.08.2026 at 06:10 a report was received at the Skopje Police Department that a human body was in the waters of the Vardar river in the Gazi Baba area. A team from the Skopje Fire Brigade recovered the body from the river, and after identification by the family it was determined to be T.G.(83) from Skopje, for whom on 24.08.2026 his son G.G.(46) reported that he had left home. An inspection was carried out, and by order of a public prosecutor the body was handed over to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for an autopsy," the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVR) said.

Police inspection and autopsy ordered

According to the statement, emergency crews pulled the body from the river early on 25 August 2026. Family members later identified the deceased as T.G.(83), a resident of Skopje.

The death was linked to an earlier missing-person report filed by the man's son, G.G.(46), who on 24 August 2026 told police his father had left home and did not return.

An inspection at the scene was completed and, following the prosecutor's instruction, the body was transferred to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for a formal autopsy to determine the cause of death. Local police continue to investigate the circumstances.
