Shooting in southern Spain kills suspected gang leader's mother‑in‑law, his pregnant sister and a 16‑year‑old

A shooting in the El Rocío neighbourhood of Isla Cristina in southern Spain left three people dead — the mother‑in‑law of a suspected gang leader, his pregnant sister and an unrelated 16‑year‑old boy — police said. The attack happened on Sunday night and is being investigated as linked to drug‑trafficking rivalries.

The 18‑year‑old grandson of the suspected gang leader was seriously wounded in the shooting, and another person suffered minor injuries, a spokesman for the Guardia Civil said. "No one has been arrested, and the police are searching for the attacker who used a long‑barrelled gun," the spokesman added.

Crime scene and investigation

The shooting took place in El Rocío, a neighbourhood of Isla Cristina, a coastal town about 7.5 kilometres from the Portuguese border. Authorities are treating the case as a settling of scores between rival families involved in drug trafficking.

The victims included a 62‑year‑old mother‑in‑law and the suspected leader's 39‑year‑old sister, who was pregnant. The 16‑year‑old male victim was not related to the family. Police have not disclosed the age or sex of the person who sustained the minor injuries.

The gang known as the "El Baba" clan has long been in conflict with rival families, including the Moriña clan. Violence between the groups escalated after a fatal shooting in 2024. "El Baba" was arrested several weeks later in northern Spain and, according to local media reports, remains in custody awaiting trial.

Local investigators said they continue to search for the shooter and to reconstruct the sequence of events as they probe links to the regional drug trade.
