Putin and Trump held a one-hour phone call
The leaders discussed envoys' recent visits, prospects for ending the conflict and ways to restore bilateral ties.
On 8 September 2026, US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone for exactly one hour, discussing recent visits by American envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Moscow and Kyiv, the Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said.
"The phone call lasted exactly one hour and was constructive and very open," Ushakov said.

According to Ushakov, Trump stressed that it would be desirable for the conflict to end as soon as possible, a development that would immediately create "many significant and wide-ranging prospects" for a full restoration of US–Russia ties. He added that such an outcome would particularly affect trade and economic relations, and that Trump is interested in achieving a breakthrough during his presidential term.
Ushakov said Putin told the US leader that Russia has no aggressive plans toward Europe and argued that claims of a Russian threat are being used as a pretext to boost military spending. Putin also outlined the situation on the front lines, Ushakov added.
The aides discussed what the Americans could realistically do to bring the military actions to a close as quickly as possible, Ushakov said, and described the tone of the exchange as positive. The two presidents agreed to remain in contact and to speak by phone operationally if needed, Ushakov said.
