Putin proposes summit with Trump and Xi to discuss end of war in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed holding a trilateral summit next month with U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping to discuss ending the war in Ukraine, U.S. media reported.

Responses from Kyiv and Brussels

Ukraine's foreign minister, Andriy Sybiha, warned that such a meeting would have the opposite effect, arguing it would encourage Moscow to continue the conflict. Sybiha wrote on X: "A trilateral meeting of the leaders of Ukraine, the US and Russia could help end the war more quickly. A trilateral meeting of the leaders of Russia, China and the US would do the opposite: it would encourage Putin to continue this war."

The European Commission also expressed doubts about Moscow's willingness to engage in genuine negotiations to stop the fighting, saying recent actions raise questions about Russia's readiness to seek a settlement.

The Kremlin's proposal, as described by U.S. outlets, would place the leaders of the three major powers in direct talks focused on Ukraine. Details such as the exact date, venue and agenda have not been made public.

Analysts say a summit involving China, Russia and the United States would carry symbolic weight, but could also complicate Kyiv's position if Ukraine is not at the table in the same format with Russia present. Officials in Kyiv have repeatedly insisted that any peace talks must respect Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

At this stage, the plan remains a proposal reported by the media and it is unclear whether the three capitals will accept or formalize the meeting.
