Putin says Russia built nearly one billion square metres of housing over the past decade
In a video message for Builder’s Day, President Vladimir Putin touted 955 million sqm of housing and relocation programmes that gave roughly 1.3 million people new apartments.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said that nearly one billion square metres of residential space were completed in Russia over the past ten years, a figure he gave in a video address marking Builder’s Day.
In the address Putin stated that more than 955 million square metres of housing were brought into use during the last decade. He added that housing construction has been accompanied by the expansion of supporting infrastructure across the country.
Putin also highlighted state relocation programmes aimed at replacing unsafe, dilapidated housing stock, saying that roughly 1.3 million people have received new apartments under those initiatives.
Public spaces and local projects
The president pointed to efforts to improve public spaces, saying a nationwide competition for projects to create comfortable urban environments has produced modern, functional public areas in small towns, historic neighbourhoods and other settlements.
Putin linked the reported construction totals to the amount of housing commissioned for use over the ten‑year period and presented the expansion of building activity as one of the achievements of the Russian economy.
