Greek authorities have opened a criminal investigation after workers employed to carry out repairs in Samaria National Park allegedly killed, roasted and ate a protected wild goat known as the kri-kri (Capra aegagrus cretica).
The men, contracted by a private company, are accused of slaughtering the animal inside the park’s central protected zone, cooking it over an open flame and consuming it on site.
Investigation under way in Chania
The Chania Forest Authority confirmed investigators are examining the incident but declined to release further details, citing confidentiality of the proceedings. Prosecutors are exploring whether the acts breached Greek and European nature-protection laws.
Authorities are also probing whether an open fire was lit inside Samaria National Park, which forms part of a UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve. Officials say that even a small blaze during the summer months can rapidly escalate and threaten sensitive ecosystems.
If the allegations are proven, those responsible could face serious criminal charges under Greek environmental protection legislation.
