Ramon Vega to run for FIFA president, first declared challenger to Gianni Infantino
Ex-player Ramon Vega will challenge Gianni Infantino in the March 2027 FIFA presidential election

Former professional defender Ramon Vega has formally announced he will run for the presidency of FIFA in the upcoming March 2027 election, becoming the first publicly declared challenger to incumbent Gianni Infantino.
Vega, who was born and raised in Switzerland to Spanish parents, said he is standing to reshape the governing body after a career in football and later work in finance. During his playing days he represented Tottenham, Celtic, Watford, Grasshoppers, Cagliari and Créteil, and retired from the professional game in 2004.
Platform and motive
In a statement Vega laid out his priorities: "I am running to reunite the global football family, to implement genuine and lasting reforms, to modernise FIFA for the 21st century, to restore stability and credibility and to bring back the trust that our game so urgently needs," he said.
Vega’s announcement sets up a direct contest with Infantino, who has already signalled he will seek another term. The incumbent provoked controversy this year after efforts to explore private investment in the World Cup were revealed, and last month said he remained "completely committed to running FIFA" despite calls from UEFA, CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation for him to step down.
Vega first weighed a bid in 2015 following the suspension of Sepp Blatter, but at that time he did not secure the necessary backing to mount a full campaign. He told supporters this week that the organisation needs modernisation and renewed trust if football is to move forward.
With the contest now open, attention will turn to which national associations and confederations line up behind the two candidates in the run-up to the vote in March 2027.
