Vouliagmeni sunbed dispute turns deadly, 82-year-old man dies
Fight over sunbeds in Vouliagmeni escalated into physical violence; an 82-year-old man later died in hospital.
An ordinary quarrel over a beach lounger in the upscale Athens resort of Vouliagmeni ended in a fatal incident that claimed the life of an 82-year-old man.
The confrontation began shortly before 10 a.m. when the elderly man and his wife arrived at the beach and settled on sunbeds. A 76-year-old man accompanied by a 21-year-old woman later took a nearby spot, and a disagreement over the loungers quickly turned heated.
The altercation and the fatal collapse
According to witnesses at the scene, the dispute escalated into open physical fighting after one party shouted, "Do you know who I am? I am from the Navy!" The 21-year-old woman who was with the older companion is reported to have joined the scuffle.
From the force of blows, stress and a fall, the 82-year-old suddenly collapsed on the sand. Emergency services arrived quickly and rushed him to hospital, where doctors worked to resuscitate him. He died about an hour later despite medical efforts.
Greek police arrested the 76-year-old on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with fatal consequences. The 21-year-old woman, initially held at the station for questioning, was released after preliminary interviews.
The arrested man's lawyers and relatives say he also suffered injuries and claim the older victim was the first to knock him to the ground. Investigators have made clear that the inquiry will hinge on forensic autopsy results and expert analyses to determine responsibility for the death.
