Nearly 135,000 people moved from one place to another inside Serbia last year, and roughly one in three of those relocations was to Belgrade.

Data from the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia (RZS) show that the city’s municipalities that received the most new residents were Zvezdara, Palilula, Voždovac and New Belgrade.

A separate poll carried out at the beginning of October by the property portal 4zida found that every second respondent is contemplating a move to another municipality or town, while 38 percent said they have moved once or more in recent years.

The survey respondents reported mixed motives: many said they like the place where they live, and those who stay most often point to family and work as reasons; those who leave cite the same factors.

What the numbers suggest

The combination of official relocations registered by RZS and the 4zida survey underlines continuing internal migration toward Belgrade and other urban centres, creating pressure on housing and municipal services in the capital’s most popular neighborhoods.

The statistics and the poll point to a pattern of mobility driven primarily by employment and family ties, with implications for local planning, public transport and housing policy across Serbia.
