Trump approval drops to record-low 31% as Democrats lead 47–35

A new four-day survey, which ended yesterday, finds that 31 percent of Americans approve of President Donald Trump’s job performance — the lowest level of support recorded during any of his presidential terms and a one-point drop from a poll taken two weeks earlier.

Democrats hold a double-digit edge in national congressional preference

The same national survey shows registered voters would choose Democratic congressional candidates by a 47 to 35 percent margin if the midterm elections were held today, a 12-point advantage for the Democrats. In the previous poll conducted two weeks earlier, Democrats led by seven points (44 percent to 37 percent).

Analysts point to economic concerns as a factor in the decline of the president’s standing. The survey links part of the fall in support to higher fuel prices following military strikes on Iran — carried out in February this year by the United States together with its ally Israel — which added pressure to household budgets.

Party and demographic breakdowns in the poll show the Democratic advantage is particularly strong among women: roughly half of female voters say they would back Democratic candidates versus 32 percent who say they would support Republicans. Men also lean Democratic in the national numbers, but by a narrower margin.

The poll finds broad dissatisfaction with the president’s economic stewardship: 68 percent of respondents said they disapprove of how Trump is handling the economy, including 37 percent of those who identify as Republicans. When asked which party would do a better job managing the economy, 40 percent picked the Democrats and 33 percent picked the Republicans.

The nationwide survey was conducted online with 1,679 adults, of whom 1,279 were registered voters. Observers note that national results do not directly determine control of the House or Senate, since outcomes are decided in individual states and districts where structural advantages can favor the Republican Party.
