Rodri officially joins Barcelona

Barcelona have completed the signing of midfielder Rodri, the club announced following confirmation by Fabrizio Romano with his customary "Here we go" message; Spanish daily Marca also reported the deal. The move was made public on 16.08.2026.

Immediate role and fitness questions

The 27-year-old arrives after a difficult spell marked by injuries across the last two seasons, a period that raised doubts about his ability to return to top form despite winning the "Golden Ball" with Barcelona two years earlier. Club sources say his physical condition has improved and that he is training well.

Rodri featured prominently for Spain under coach Luis de la Fuente during the campaign that brought the World Cup title, and his fitness now appears to be back at a high level. If only minor knocks keep away, Barcelona expect him to strengthen both their midfield options on the pitch and the dressing-room environment.

At the World Cup he lined up alongside as many as eight players who currently represent Barcelona, which the club believes will ease his integration and ensure a warm reception from teammates and supporters.

Rodri was absent from Manchester City’s squad for the Community Shield match against Arsenal. After that game, Enzo Maresca said that "every team needs a player like him".

Real Madrid had also shown interest and at one stage appeared to be closing in, with reports even linking the player to José Mourinho’s side; in the end, however, Rodri has opted to continue his career in Catalonia with Barcelona.
