Road-safety council urges caution for 2 August Ilinden holiday

The Republic Council for Road Traffic Safety has issued an appeal to all road users ahead of the 2 August national holiday — Ilinden — calling for increased responsibility and strict observance of traffic rules.

Safety recommendations for the holiday weekend

The council warned that traffic volumes are expected to rise during the holiday weekend, particularly on routes toward popular destinations such as Ohrid, Prespa, Dojran, Krushevo, Pelince, excursion sites and the border crossings. “In conditions of increased traffic intensity, careful and responsible participation in traffic is a key prerequisite for preserving the safety of all participants,” the Republic Council for Road Traffic Safety said.

To reduce risks, the council listed a set of practical measures for drivers and other road users. They urged everyone to follow traffic laws and posted signage, adapt speed to traffic density and road conditions, and never drive under the influence of alcohol or illegal psychotropic substances — or while fatigued.

Recommended precautions

• Observe posted speed limits and adjust speed for traffic density and road conditions.
• Do not drive under the influence of alcohol or illegal psychotropic substances, and avoid driving when tired.
• Wear seat belts at all times; children up to five years old should be transported in appropriate child seats.
• Do not use mobile phones or other electronic devices while driving.
• Check the vehicle's technical condition before departure and take regular breaks — recommended every two hours on long trips.

The appeal also addressed cyclists, motorcyclists, users of light electric vehicles and pedestrians, urging them to move attentively and respect traffic rules to help improve overall road safety.

“Every responsible behavior in traffic contributes to the preservation of human lives. Let us not allow a moment of inattention, speeding or an irresponsible decision to lead to unwanted consequences. The Republic Council for Road Traffic Safety congratulates all citizens on the holiday 2 August — Day of the Republic, Ilinden — and wishes them safe travel and arrival at their desired destination,” the statement said.
