Lunch at St. Naum restaurant: bill about 3,000 denars for four
A reader sent a receipt after a lakeside lunch near St. Naum monastery and praised the food, service and reasonable bill.
In our Recommendations section we regularly point readers toward places and products we think deserve attention; this time a reader sent us a photo of a restaurant receipt along with a short message about a recent lunch. "We are sending you the bill and would like to share this wonderful experience with you and your readers!" the reader wrote.
The guest said they were very pleased with the service: attentive staff, well-prepared food and an overall pleasant atmosphere that prompted them to praise the place at a time when prices at tourist sites are often questioned.
Setting and setting the mood
The restaurant sits roughly 28 kilometres from Ohrid, in the protected area that frames Lake Ohrid below the Galicica massif. The adjacent St. Naum monastery — known for its centuries-old heritage and the relics of St. Naum — lends the location a calm, historic character.
Immediately next to the holy site is the restaurant bearing the same name. Its traditional architecture and terraces blend into the monastic environment and offer diners a direct view of the lake.
The party — four friends, made up of two married couples — chose a Lenten menu because it was the fasting period. They started with generous fresh salads and a chilled glass of ouzo, then moved on to the classic Macedonian specialty: tavche-gravche prepared according to an original recipe. They described the meal as a true culinary pleasure, enhanced by the setting.
At the end of the meal the surprise was the bill: for everything on the table — salads, drinks and main courses for four people — the total came to about 3,000 denars. For an establishment located at one of the country’s most visited historic and touristic sites, the diners judged the price more than fair.
Beyond the food and view, the readers singled out genuine hospitality as the reason they would return. Occasions like this, they said, are reminders that quality regional cuisine and warm service can still be found along Lake Ohrid’s shores.
