Ruini — Elena Chemerska’s documentary in Cineplexx from 29 October

From 29 October the feature documentary Ruini by Elena Chemerska opens at Cineplexx: daily screenings start at 20:00, and on Sundays there are two showings at 16:00 and 20:00.

Ruini is an intimate film that explores personal and collective memory, loss and legacy through the revival of a public monument. The director returns to North Macedonia to begin the revitalisation of the Monument of Freedom in Kochani — originally created by her late father, artist Gligor Chemerski, together with architect Radovan Radjenovic — and turns that restoration process into a meditation on time and remembrance.

The film interweaves archival footage and private recollections with images of the monument today, using a personal story to raise broader questions about shared ideals that have faded and what remains after they disappear.

Festival run and production

Ruini had its world premiere on 14 June 2026 in the documentary competition of the 28th Shanghai International Film Festival, and the film also had a Macedonian premiere at the MakeDox festival.

The film grew out of Chemerska’s long-term project "Fatherland: Monument of Freedom", launched in 2017, which culminated in the complete restoration of the monument and its mosaics in 2024. Ruini is produced by Cinema Futura and Minimal Collective from North Macedonia in co-production with Restart (Croatia) and POTEM (Slovenia).

Viewers who prefer the big screen can catch Ruini at Cineplexx from 29 October; check the listed times for daily screenings and the double showing on Sundays.
