Russian missile entered Polish airspace — NATO on alert

The incursion of a likely Russian cruise missile into Polish airspace prompted an urgent response from NATO and authorities in Warsaw. The incident was assessed as a serious escalation and prompted measures to strengthen defenses along Poland's borders.

Political and military steps

Following a telephone conversation with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Secretary General Mark Rutte said that the Alliance stands in solidarity with Poland and will continue to strengthen its defensive readiness. He described the incident as "another irresponsible act by Russia and a dangerous consequence of the war against Ukraine."

Martin O'Donel, spokesperson for NATO's military staff in the Belgian town of Mons, reported that the Alliance is in close communication with Polish authorities over the breach of Polish airspace. The case also involved Supreme Allied Commander Alexus G. Grinkevich, who spoke with the Chief of the General Staff of Poland, Vjeslav Kukula.

In response to the incursion, both Poland and NATO activated air and ground defense capabilities. Among the assets that were scrambled and deployed were:

  • two Polish F-16 fighter jets
  • a NATO Airbus A330 tanker aircraft
  • a Polish Saab 340 airborne early warning aircraft
  • a Polish Mi-24 helicopter

Military and diplomatic representatives emphasize that the measures taken were precautionary and in accordance with procedures for a breach of a NATO ally's airspace. NATO announced it will maintain the heightened readiness while further checks and coordination with Polish authorities continue.

The incident further heightens tensions over the risks of the conflict in Ukraine spreading, and the Alliance said it will monitor the situation and coordinate with member states on possible new defensive measures.
