Russian strike hits Kyiv's Northern Bridge; traffic blocked

A Russian strike hit a second major bridge in Kyiv on Saturday morning, Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported, as Moscow steps up attacks on the Ukrainian capital's critical infrastructure.

The strike damaged the roadway and the overhead trolleybus network on the Northern Bridge (Pivnichni), forcing authorities to block traffic across the structure.

Damage, disruptions and context

The attack comes after the city’s Southern Bridge (Pivdeni) was repeatedly targeted by Russian drones on Thursday and Friday. Kyiv officials say both bridges link the eastern and western parts of the capital and had not been struck before Thursday, a development Kyiv views as a new phase in Moscow’s strategy.

Previous strikes on the Southern Bridge caused serious traffic disruptions: vehicle movement and crossings by the metro were suspended. Many of the city’s roughly three million residents rely on the metro to move across Kyiv.

After the attack on the Southern Bridge, passengers reported that dust from the blast wave entered a carriage through the ventilation system.
